The Function of Piano Pedals and Their Importance for Young Learners

Posted on October 18, 2024

At Pleasanton Academy of Music, one of the best piano schools in the East Bay, we take pride in providing professional music education with joy for kids, preparing them for international exams and helping them win competitions. A key aspect of piano performance is understanding and using the pedals correctly. Our exceptional instructors ensure that students master these essential tools.

The Left Pedal (Una Corda)

The left pedal, or una corda, shifts the piano’s hammers slightly, causing a softer, more muted sound. It allows the pianist to add dynamic expression, playing softly without losing the clarity of notes.

The Sostenuto Pedal

The middle pedal, known as the sostenuto pedal, sustains only the notes that are held down when the pedal is pressed. This unique feature lets pianists sustain certain notes while playing others without overlap. It’s often used in more advanced pieces for added control and texture.

The Damper Pedal

The most frequently used pedal, the damper pedal (on the right), lifts all the dampers off the strings, allowing notes to resonate and sustain. This pedal adds richness and depth to the music and is crucial for creating smooth, connected passages.

Importance of Pedal Extensions for Little Kids

For young learners, using the piano pedals correctly can be a challenge due to their height. To ensure proper posture and technique, it’s essential to use a pedal extension box. This tool allows young students to reach the pedals comfortably without compromising their posture, enabling them to play with proper technique from the very beginning. At Pleasanton Academy of Music, each room is equipped with a pedal extension box to support our youngest pianists as they develop their skills.

By incorporating these tools and techniques into our lessons, we ensure that students not only learn to play but also to understand the expressive power of the piano. Our dedication to providing top-tier piano education, with personalized instruction and performance opportunities, sets us apart as a leading music academy in East Bay.

Whether your child is preparing for an international music exam or aspiring to win a competition, our experienced instructors are here to guide them every step of the way, nurturing both their talent and their love for music.
