Flower Piano 10th Anniversary: Pleasanton Academy of Music Students Shine in San Francisco

Posted on September 14, 2025

Music has a unique ability to bring people together, to transform ordinary spaces into something magical, and to create lasting memories that stay with us for a lifetime. One of the best examples of this in the Bay Area is Flower Piano, a remarkable event that has become a tradition since its founding in 2015. This year, the San Francisco Botanical Garden once again blossomed with music and artistry as Flower Piano returned for its 10th anniversary.

For ten days, from September 12–21, 2025, visitors strolled through the gardens, discovering 12 beautifully placed pianos and enjoying over 100 live performances. It was a celebration of both nature and music, with highlights including the Special Opening Night Concert, family-friendly activities, food and beverages, the second annual Flower Piano Fashion Show, and countless opportunities for the community to engage with live performance.

But for us at Pleasanton Academy of Music, this year’s Flower Piano was even more special. Three of our talented students — Zedric Wong (violin)Donghu Kim (cello), and Vivian Nguyen (piano) — performed the Arensky Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 32, captivating audiences and showing just how powerful music education and performance opportunities can be.

 A Performance That Inspires

Watching our students perform at Flower Piano’s 10th anniversary was a proud moment for our entire academy. Preparing for such a high-profile event takes dedication, artistry, and a willingness to push beyond comfort zones. The progress our students have made through consistent training and participation in competitions is evident in their confident performances. Over time, they have learned essential musical skills through structured lessons and regular practice.

What makes this chamber trio truly remarkable is not only their performance at Flower Piano but also their impressive achievements across the United States. Together, they have won numerous competitions, including:

  •  USOMC (United States Open Music Competition)
  •  United States International Music Competition

Their musical excellence has also brought them to prestigious stages, including a performance at the world-renowned Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

This track record shows the extraordinary level of training and preparation our students receive at Pleasanton Academy of Music, where students are taught by experienced instructors who focus on comprehensive music education, and we combine world-class instruction with opportunities to shine in competitions and concerts nationwide.

Violin Lessons: Traditional and Suzuki Methods

One of the reasons our violinists excel on stage is the balance we create between different teaching philosophies. Our violin program offers:

  • Traditional violin method → A structured, technique-driven approach emphasizing scales, etudes, and repertoire.
  • Suzuki method → A nurturing approach that begins early, often with violin sizes for kids as young as three or four, emphasizing ear training, repetition, and parental involvement. The active role of the parent is essential, as parents support their child’s learning by participating in lessons, group classes, and at-home practice.
  • Combination Suzuki-traditional method → Many families benefit from a hybrid model, combining Suzuki’s strengths in musicality and listening skills with the traditional method’s emphasis on note reading and advanced technique.

For very young children, we offer a specially developed program for preschoolers that builds confidence and introduces musical fundamentals in a playful and engaging way.

Whether a student is taking violin lessons for beginners, pursuing one-on-one violin lessons with a private violin teacher, or advancing to competition level, we create a personalized learning experience that adapts to each child’s needs.

We also recognize that students come from many backgrounds. That’s why our school offers violin lessons for childrenviolin lessons for adults, and specialized support for those seeking beginner violin lessons as well as those preparing for advanced performance. Parents play a crucial role in supporting their child’s practice and participation in classes, which greatly enhances the student’s progress and confidence.

This diversity of instruction ensures that when our students, like Zedric, step on stage at events like Flower Piano, they bring a well-rounded artistry that combines technique, interpretation, and passion. Through violin lessons, students are developing both technical skills and personal qualities such as discipline and focus. Discipline is fostered throughout their musical education, helping students build structured learning habits and a dedicated work ethic.

Piano Lessons: From Beginners to Advanced Musicians

For pianists like Vivian Nguyen, participating in an event such as Flower Piano is a dream come true. The Botanical Garden literally transforms into a pianist’s wonderland, with twelve beautifully maintained pianos set among flowers, trees, and winding garden paths.

At Pleasanton Academy of Music, we prepare students for opportunities like this through structured lesson formats, including private piano lessonspiano lessons in East Bay, and programs designed for all ages:

  • Piano lessons for kids: Designed to make music engaging and enjoyable, with games, visual aids, and familiar songs.
  • Piano lessons for children: Structured programs that gradually introduce sight-readingmusic theory, and improvisation.
  • Piano lessons for adults: Whether starting for the first time or returning after years away, adults benefit from tailored instruction and flexible scheduling.
  • Beginner piano lessons / intermediate / advanced: Each level is carefully designed to build skills progressively, ensuring that students feel challenged but supported.

Having a piano or keyboard at home for daily practice is essential for consistent progress; we recommend a full-sized instrument with weighted keys for effective practice. Students are encouraged to have their own piano or keyboard at home to support their daily practice and skill development.

Our piano instructors focus on building strong fundamentals while also allowing creativity. Creative expression and improvisation are emphasized in every lesson, encouraging students to develop their own musical ideas and personal style. Students learn not just classical repertoire but also explore composition and modern styles, making their training versatile and fulfilling.

This combination of technical training and creativity is what gives our piano students the confidence to perform at international events, competitions, and, of course, in front of thousands at Flower Piano. Regular playing, both during lessons and at home, is key to building confidence, mastery, and musical progression.

 The Importance of Performance Opportunities

One of the defining elements of our philosophy at Pleasanton Academy of Music is that music is meant to be shared. We don’t just teach notes and technique; we create environments where students can perform regularly.

  • Studio performance classes allow students to practice in a supportive, low-pressure environment with their peers.
  • Community recitals give students the chance to play for audiences of family, friends, and neighbors. Students and parents are encouraged to attend these events to support learning and engagement.
  • High-profile events like Flower Piano, Disney Hall concerts, and international competitions allow students to showcase their talent at the highest levels. Performing in a professional environment or on a professional stage is essential for building confidence and providing a credible musical experience.

By participating in a variety of performances, students develop not only as musicians but as confident individuals. They learn how to handle nerves, how to express themselves authentically, and how to connect with people through music.

Scheduling regular performances and recitals is important to track student progress and provide valuable performance experience.
