Josh Sherman is an active performer and instructor. His life in music began playing the piano and trumpet in elementary school, taking weekly private lessons and playing in school
bands and orchestras. Throughout middle and high school he auditioned into elite ensembles and was recognized on the county and state level several times for prowess in music. In his free time he explored all the other brass instruments (Trombone, French Horn, Tuba, Euphonium), reaching a performance level of proficiency on all of them.
He began his college experience at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying Film Scoring and Music Performance. While at Berklee, he auditioned into several of their
flagship ensembles and studied with many of their elite faculty. After 2 years at Berklee, he decided to transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) to study with world-renowned musicians Ralph Alessi on Trumpet and Adam Benjamin, keyboardist for the band Kneebody, to complete his music degree. While at UNR he played in their flagship Jazz and Latin ensembles/combos and performed around Reno playing several genres in numerous different bands. He graduated from UNR with his Bachelor of Music Degree in Applied Music (Performance). Along with his passions for piano and brass, Josh is also very interested in music theory and has studied it comprehensively for the past several years. He began tutoring students in music theory starting in his senior year of high school and continued to do so throughout college, as he tested out of all 4 semesters of the Berklee College of Music’s theory curriculum before arriving.
Josh has performed alongside Tia Fuller, George Garzone, Mic Gillette, Kris Davis, Michael Formanek, Peter Apflebaum, Ralph Alessi, Adam Benjamin, Wayne Wallace, Peter Epstein and many more inspiring artists. He currently resides in the Bay Area and is playing professionally in bands playing everything from jazz to rock to funk, as well as teaching private lessons.
Music has taken Josh all over the country and he would love to share the knowledge he has gathered over the years from some of the world’s greatest piano and trumpet players. He wants to bring the same joy he has found in music to each of his students, starting them off with a strong foundation so they can feel as free to explore music as he was. Most importantly, the private lesson and music experience should be fun for the student, so Josh does his best to individualize each experience and routine to meet every student’s needs and goals.
His teaching philosophy comes from the great painter Bob Ross: “Talent is a pursued interest. Anything that you're willing to practice, you can do.” Josh does not come from a musical family and feels very strongly that with a lifetime ahead of us, through practice and dedication, anything one can imagine in music is possible.
